Rochester's Best Breakfast Sandwich?

For over two years, we've had the same weekly ritual: Friday Breakfast Sandwich at Salad Bros.

Located in the the Shops at University Square, Salad Bros is a staple and well-known name in Rochester, and fortunately for us, it's only a hop, skip, and jump from Dunlap & Seeger.   Salad Bros' fame has come as a result of their fresh baked buns, home-made soups, and delicious salads. Over the lunch hour, you'll see long (but swift moving) lines of customers waiting for a tasty lunch. The lunch specials are no secret.

A little-known secret is Salad Bros breakfast sandwiches.   Stop by in the mornings (they open at 8:00am) and you won't see any lines.  Instead you get a chance to see the brains by the operation (Jeff and Kathy).   Even better, if you play your cards right, one of the two might even personally make you a breakfast sandwich.

Their breakfast sandwiches have many variations between eggs, ham, bacon, sausage, peanut butter and different kinds of cheeses.  In our opinion, the best choice is the sausage and cheese (Swiss or American).

Ultimately, what makes the breakfast sandwich amazing is Salad Bros' world famous fresh cooked buns.  Indeed, their motto: "You'll love our buns!" holds true.  Between those delicious buns you'll enjoy the following:

- a fresh-cooked before-your-eyes egg overeasy sprinkled with pepper,
- a delicious sausage patty
- and your choice of cheese melted over the sausage patty.

As the pictures show, the sandwiches are placed in a plastic container.  This is key.   You must leave the sandwich in the container for at least four minutes.  This requires discipline and patience, but the rewards are great. The container traps the heat from the sausage and egg, thereby warming the buns to a perfect balance between doughy and firm.

The last step is the flip.  You must flip the container such that the top of the bun is on the bottom.  The top of the bun is generally more firm and rigid.  The flip allows the juices and moisture to seep into the top bun; thus completing your quest for perfect breakfast sandwich harmony.

The only catch to this heavenly creation:  You have to hear Jeff tell bad lawyers jokes before you get to enjoy.     If you're not a lawyer, then it only enhances the experience.

We're there almost every Friday at 8:15am or so.  Come say hi.
